Aviator Weekly - Dec. 23

Alliance Early Learning School

\r\n

As a review for learning numbers 1-20, student's in Shaena Winner's class spent time working together as groups. Students made Christmas trees and decorated them with numbered ornaments. Each group collaborated to put the numbers in the correct order.

\r\n

The students in Crystal Gibbons’ kindergarten class recently learned more about authors and illustrators by becoming one themselves! They worked together to write and illustrate the story, "Joey Goes On An Adventure!" Each child wrote one sentence about what Joey, the magical snowman did. They drew the illustrations with Misty Shearrow, the class volunteer. They worked together on creating an introductory sentence and a concluding sentence for the book. The pages were then sent out to be published into a real book! Thank you to the Shearrow family and BES Electric, every child was presented a copy of the book to keep as their very own at their author party.

Reading Matters

\r\n

Third grade students participated in a friendly reading competition. Students added an ornament to a tree each time ten minutes of reading was completed. The winning reading class was awarded candy canes.

\r\n

Science

\r\n

First graders finished off their living and nonliving science unit by comparing and contrasting gummy worms and real earthworms. They looked at length, size, color, texture and weight.

\r\n

Adjectives

\r\n

Our first graders have been learning that adjectives are describing words. Students enjoyed creating adjective masks to describe themselves. Students also used the week before Christmas to explore the Grinch and use that story to find and use adjectives.

\r\n

The Rockhill and Parkway staff want to wish our students and their families a happy and healthy new year. 2020 is going to be filled with lots of learning.

\r\n

Break out

\r\n

First graders have been putting their brains to work, solving puzzles to open Breakout Edu boxes. Breakout Edu is a platform for immersive learning games that is highly engaging and develops 21st century skills. Students work together to communicate, solve problems and beat the box.

\r\n

Bel Aire/Rockhill Partnership

\r\n

Rockhill Elementary and Bel Aire Senior Living have collaborated with activities over the past three years. Students have made crafts for the residents for various occasions and BelAir hosts an end of the school year picnic for the third grade students. This past week a few third grade students delivered handmade Christmas Cards to the residents from their classmates. The cards helped to spread Christmas cheer to the residents.
