APA Formatting

PLAGIARISM

1.      Do not claim the words and ideas of another as your own.

2.      Give credit where credit is due.

3.      Quotation marks should be used to indicate exact words of another author.  “The art of nursing is the work of the heart” (Dos, 2009, p. 22).

4.      Paraphrase is a summarization of a passage or rearranges the order of a sentence and changing some of the words; you need to credit the source in the text.   Nursing is the art of using the heart (Doe, 2009).

5.      Can also do: Doe (2009) stated that “the art of nursing is the work of the heart” (p. 312).

6.      Or: Doe (2009) stated nursing is the art of using the heart (p. 312).

7.      Just a reminder if you have not lived the material presented or been the author of the material, you must give credit.

8.      If citing the same author in a paragraph, the date is only needed after each sentence (2009) not the authors name.

TITLE PAGE

1.      Title should summarize the main idea of your paper in less than 50 characters.

2.      Header: at the right side of the page

               One or two words of the title

                5 spaces then page number

               Close header

3.      Running head:  TITLE IN ALL CAPS  (on title page only).

4.      In the middle of the page place:

                   Title

                   Your name

                   Date

REFERENCES:

1.    In alphabetical order

2.    Tables, figures, and pictures must have a reference and noted at the end of the work such as (Doe, 2009, p. 22).

3.    Below are some examples of acceptable reference citations:

Personal communication:  J, Doe (personal communication, April 6, 2010).  This can be used for information that you have used from the classroom.
