What is a Medical Coding & Billing Specialist?
Where do they Work?

The Insurance Billing Specialist is an individual who processes health insurance claims in accordance with legal, professional, and insurance company guidelines and regulations.  The Insurance Billing Specialist is a key player in the financial operation of the agency or medical office.  The Coding Specialist is responsible for abstracting diagnostic and procedural phrases from a patient’s record and translating them into coded form.  This coded information is then utilized for reimbursement purposes as well as patient outcome and research.

Employment opportunities include health care environments such as outpatient clinics, physician’s facilities, physician’s offices, medical billing companies, as well as insurance companies.

There is an increasing demand in the Medical Billing field for individuals with the special skills required to function in the handling of patient accounts, commercial and government insurances billing procedures, and Workers’ Compensation.  The Medical Billing Student will gain expertise in medical coding, claim reimbursement, medical health insurance, and office procedures.

Students in the program will gain the necessary training in a nine month program to prepare them to compete in the open job market. 

New coding and Billing positions have opened up and still more are expected in the future.
